I'm moderately glad, as I got a few things accomplished today. My new ottoman came in so I went and picked that up. I also sharpened my pocket knife and did a test-coat of wood conditioner on the first cabinet door I'm re-finishing. In addition to all this, I practiced my hand-planing a bit, swept out the garage, and helped my sister do a load of dishes at her new place. Uh oh, this entry is beginning to turn into an excuse to list off the events of my day. Must.. stop. Must... go.. straight to.. links...
Remember, just because something is easy doesn't mean its what's best for you... or anyone else, for that matter. I saw these guys at the first anti-war protest I went to in Sanfran last January... very entertaining. Finally, I managed to finish my decorative video tape box the other day. This morning I put up photos from the project, so check 'em out. |

I've been spending a considerable amount of time lately trying to finish the work on my decorative box. Most of my recent efforts have been invested in putting coats of clear lacquer on the exterior, however today I finally got enough on to be satisfied. I did 2 coats on the underside of the lid and a single coat on the box interior, then waxed and buffed the whole thing down. The biggest advice I can give anybody that would attempt all this is to get a good respirator/face mask. I used Deft clear gloss lacquer, and when you combine the rather pungant odor of that stuff with the lacquer thinner fumes, you're gonna be hacking like a soldier in 1917 Belgium in no time. A good filtered respirator will save you from this, not to mention the endless chemical headaches.
My next task in this project is to find some way of grinding down the hinge ends (the smallest ones I could find were still too large), and then I might debate putting some felt buttons on the bottom corners to protect the finish on the underside. When these tasks have been accomplished, there will be photos galore in my projects section. Bis spŠter... |

Happy Easter, folks. Today is not just Easter, though... here's a few things that also happened on this day:
George Handel was born in 1685. Napoleon III was born in 1808. Adolph Hitler was born in 1889. Tito Puente was born in 1943. Apollo 16 landed on the surface of the moon in 1972. Columbine High School was the scene of a shooting spree by two depressed and disenchanted students in 1999. |

I've been meaning to write in my blog for days. I guess I've just been busy.. and lazy.
"Liberated and mad at us.. Iraqis take to the streets to protest the US occupation." How hilariously ironic is that, eh? Poetic justice at its finest... I was watching some idiotic fast-paced show on VH1 this afternoon when I just suddenly got this uncontrollable urge to turn it off. When the tv went black, the only show on was a reflection of myself, darkened by the shade of the glass screen.. sitting in my chair with my feet up, drinking a soda. It was beautiful... I am more important than television. We all are. I got a 25-gallon air compressor yesterday. It's primary purpose was to allow me to use a sprayer to re-stain on my folks' kitchen cabinetry. I have yet to fully assemble the thing, mainly because I'm still reading through the endless hazard descriptions in the manual. It should be cool, providing I don't get too paranoid about all the safety warnings. Our government wouldn't have invaded Iraq even partially for the sake of war profiteering.. no way. Oh wait.. yeah.. yeah, looks like we did. My bad. |

Well hey, it looks like the war was ok after all. Why? Well my good man, because Iraq chooses democracy! Yeah, like after being invaded and occupied by the most powerful army the world has ever seen, they're going to adapt any system of government other than what the victors decree? Keep precedents in mind here, folks. Remember, every nation the Soviet Union occupied had a pro-Soviet communist government installed. There's some serious clandestine sh*t going on with this war... every day decisions are being made that take advantage of the honor of our fighting troops, further damage our already tanked economy, and oxidize our decaying support in world politics.
And, as if invading Afghanistan and Iraq wasn't enough, now the recent sabre rattling with Syria is, quite frankly, beyond frightening. If we invade Syria or any other nation in the world before Bush and his cronies leave office... this is not Rome, but Nazi Germany. Before WW2 broke out, the Nazis invaded and occupied 3 countries in the carefully orchestrated name of security and nationalism. One more for the USA and it's a tie. Still gung-ho about the war? Read this entire list and if you still feel the same way, there is something genuinely wrong with you. I'm serious. Huzzah. I completed the first section of the revamped version of my old Historical Atlas of Germany site. I anticipate a launch when I have at least 3 full sections done, which I estimate will be sometime in early summer, if not sooner. |

I've been busy working all week.. for once. My lack of shifts at work for Jan, Feb, and March had been slowly dragging me kicking and screaming into the dark alleyways of poorville. Lately, however, things have been picking up... and then some. I am even considering a major goods purchase, though with no job past late May, I am going to go the conservative route.
When I haven't been at work, I've been hammering away at the new version of my Historical Atlas of Germany website, which is set to launch probably sometime early this summer. If that wasn't enough, I've also been finalizing the work on the decorative box I've been working on since February. I finally glued the bottom on yesterday, and all that's left to do is cut off the excess, sand the whole thing one last time, put on a clear coat, and attach the hardware. Then I can drive myself further into madness with my second box project, a larger (but easier to make) monstrosity which will house all my old photo negatives. Mad, I tell you... mad. Oh yes, and I've also kickstarted my old "working out" regimen... again. So Rach, I have now referenced you for the third time. Also, a hearty congrats to Anne at her new job, she starts tomorrow! |

Well, my sister finally moved into her new place a couple days ago. I spent part of this afternoon cleaning up the mess she left behind in the bathroom after not cleaning for the last 6 months. Not a pretty sight.
As a rule, something is generally wisely not decided unless there is an established pattern of certainty. This was not the case with the weather today, as it hailed, rained, and was blaringly sunny on numerous random occasions. Contrary to today's weather, spring is apparently here in full bloom... literally. Also, a note to the readers: as of the first of April I have begun using a new series of blog icons. Woo. Yeah, even I got sick of the old ones. I have, however decided to continue using a couple of my old favorites... keep an eye out for those select few and much, much more. |
