Tuesday, 9-30-03. Perpetually sunny and warm
Today was an unfortunate sequel to a horrible nightmare. I slept well, got some things done in the morning, and even started hanging a few things on my wall. As a result, I was in a pretty upbeat mood, at least until I headed out to my truck. What lay before me when I walked onto the parking lot pavement conjured up immeasureable feelings of anger and frustration, as I found the back of my truck open and my $450 mountain bike gone.

Apparently, even though over the last few years I've made a solid habit of locking the back of my camper when my bike is in it, last night somehow I failed to do so. To soften the blow, however, my sister was kind enough to lend me hers temporarily. This is hilariously bizarre and ironic, as my sister's bike originally belonged to me, and it was the same one that was stolen 2 summers ago, prompting me to buy the second one which has now also has been stolen... however, both thefts occurred under totally different circumstances. I plan on filling out a police report tomorrow, as I'm obsessive-compulsive and still have the original receipt and serial number. I've been playing my new Richard Wagner CD set to try and help myself chill out, and it's working.

In other news, I cut the backing board and a 5th shelf for the bookcase I'm working on in my shop class. Now I just need to get the trim for the 5th shelf, drill all the pin holes, attach the back, and put on a couple coats of clear lacquer. Gloss or semi gloss? You choose.

Last night I spent my first night here at my new place. It was the worst night of sleep I've had for quite some time, but I think it was mostly due to stress and restlessness... not to mention the fact that the water pipes from upstairs apartments apparently go through the rear wall in my bedroom...

Today was a considerably busy day. I fulfilled my final promise to my folks and vacuumed all the carpeting and baseboards of my old room, then helped set up their office furniture, fax, and computer in there. They didn't wait long to lay claim to the room, and I don't blame them. They're turning it into an at-home office, should be nice...

Moving is temporarily on hold, at least until I get more boxes (I've used all of them) and find a place to put my collection of books, which, among other things, includes a full-volume set of Encyclopedia Brittanica from 1941. Yesterday I was gloriously inspired by the idea that, with some good oak veneer plywood and some oak facing, I could build myself a pretty decent, solid bookshelf to help take care of this problem. To make a long story short, I eventually got the plywood I was looking for from my shop instructor, and cut all the pieces and the shelves within about an hour. Today I got the facing, but I need to buy L-brackets for all the inside corners before I can proceed any further... and the local store is out of them.

In other news, I found and relocated my 3rd Ÿber spider since I started moving my stuff into the new place. It was apparently making a home for itself in a box I've had in storage for about 4 years, mostly containing surplus batteries and emergency supplies. I guess he/she is a survivalist?

I generally consider television to be pretty worthy of abhorrence most of the time, commercials in particular. That belief, combined with the outrageousness of local monthly cable fees here, left me with only one option... to put my money where my mouth is and forego getting cable in my new place. I actually think it'll be an excellent idea, as I'll be forced to read more, listen to the radio, and actually go outside and do social things. Now, to spread my message to those who can be easily swayed or are generally of the same mindset...

More moving today, only this time it's mostly my old camping gear. I more or less am finished with grocery shopping, and the kitchen is pretty solid now. My old storage space will have to move on now, as I emptied it with my sister's help this afternoon. Having rested inside it for the last 2 years, and in my parents' garage for 2 years previous to that, my furniture is quite filthy. I'm having some cleaning folks come out next Friday.

This has been an eventful week, but there's one last thing I want to mention. Tonight I gave my ancient, half-broken bike back to the paths that have given me so much. After a brief ceremony at midnight, I set it free. I got my $90 worth... and the world.

This was the day of the kitchen. I unwrapped, unpacked, and washed all my kitchen items, while taking a break in the middle of it all to get temporary crown #2 put on. In addition to all that, I've also been to the market about a million times, as every time I came back to the apartment after an errand I realized I had forgotten a few things.

I had a few 'new apartment firsts' today. I found my first dead fly in one of my sliding window gutters, and I relocated my first spider. It is happier now.

I've been a good citizen... I've bought a lot of stuff. They can't put me away now...

In preparation of moving into my new place, I went out and bought ridiculous amounts of 'stuff' today. Specifically, kitchen stuff. I rid myself of all my hand-me-down dishes, glasses, pots, and pans years ago, so now I have an excellent opportunity to get some quality wares.

Amid the usually bizarre interactions with my family, tonight I built my mom a ramp going from the door to the garage down to the concrete floor. It will help my mom get into her car a lot easier in the morning, as it will be some time before she gets her cast off.

Well now, happy birthday to me. I've been keeping my birthday moderately low-key in recent years, as the older I get the less I enjoy being reminded that I'm losing track of time. Since I knew today would be a pretty busy day (see below), my family and I decided to observe my birthday yesterday instead. We had a Japanese-American dinner, and then had some mini-cheesecakes and baklava I picked up at a bakery. Tonight, however, my sister decided to spring a surprise on me and took me to see Darrell Hammond's stand-up routine at the Arts Center. I don't think it was one of his better performances, as he seemed either drunk, very tired, or high on cocaine. His opening act was very good, a comic by the name of Mark Pitta.

Today also marked a couple other noteworthy beginnings. The first being, this afternoon was my first day at the new job. I helped a couple kids with factoring and geometry, and after a couple hours of work I was driving home feeling pretty energized. It was a hell of a lot easier than my old job, where I worked twice as long and usually went home around 10 pm feeling drained and brain-dead. The second noteworthy event today was that my application for a new apartment was approved. If all goes well, I may be signing the agreement on Wednesday and getting my keys later this week. Should be an interesting experiment in life...

Today I met with some folks looking for a second guitarist in their band. Unfortunately, their drummer was way too out-of-time and his fills were excessively repetitive. It also didn't help that their practice space was a converted pump house out in the middle of nowhere, and that the style of the singer/guitarist wasn't even in the parking lot of the ballpark of what I'd consider 'interesting' to play along with. Everyone looked bored and the long drive to get out there pretty much sealed the coffin of my interest. The whole thing appeared to be way too much of a work-in-progress, regardless. When you're in the music scene, that's just the way it goes sometimes. I think when things aren't so busy I might give the other guitarist that was in my last band a call to see what he's up to.

It was a weird day. It was a dark day. It was a hot day.

I woke up this morning to the sad news that both Johnny Cash and John Ritter had died. I unfortunately was unable to gain a full appreciation of Johnny Cash until recent years, and all I can say is that his ability to be honest and forthright touched a lot of folks, including myself. The world has lost a universal son and a pillar of self-definition. Salute.

Additionally... with everyone else that grew up and/or watched tv in the early 80's, I remember Three's Company. John Ritter was as talented as he was funny, and will be sorely missed as well.

I spent most of the day attempting to make rallying speeches to high school classrooms, trying to get kids interested in the after-school tutoring program I'll be working in starting next Monday. On the drive back, the thermometer hanging from my rear-view mirror peaked at 120 and didn't budge the whole way. Needless to say, the weather's been a bit warm lately.

On a side note, my luck with women doesn't appear to be improving. Too bad for them... I'm stubborn.

I went camping with my sister and 8 of her friends this weekend down in Big Sur. It was an excellent trip, though brief. We covered all the basics: campfire smoke inhalation, funky bathrooms, tent-sharing, noisy campsite neighbors, sunburns, etc. The only things we didn't have were bad weather and bugs, thank god. Spoiled though I may seem, I was able to test out my new camping cot on this trip, and man was it sweet. Everyone there was a lot of fun and I hope to do the trip again next year, except I won't need to bring so much of my camping gear.

I know it's a little late, but Charles Bronson died a week ago today... sucks. RIP, mate.

Well this is interesting...
